Classics

The Department provides courses in Latin, Classical Greek, Classical Civilisation.

Latin (with background Classical Studies) is taken by all boys in the First and Second Forms, and many continue the subject to GCSE. Greek and Classical Civilisation are also available as options in the Third Form, and then as GCSE courses. In this way, all boys have the chance of exploring Classical culture - and hence the foundations of Western European culture - either through the ancient languages or in a non-linguistic course.

A level courses are also offered. In Latin and Greek, knowledge of the languages is extended by reading important works of Classical literature. Classical Civilisation requires no knowledge of the languages and is open to all; ancient societies are studied through their literature and visual arts, and comparisons drawn with modern society.

The Department organises visits to classical sites, and to local museums, exhibitions and dramatic performances.
